Broadcasting row. This time in Egypt.
A few days ago I spoke of broadcasting issues that were brewing in Ghana.
A new TV broadcasting row has erupted in Egypt with the country’s football association threatening a black-out of the Egyptian Super Cup fixture between League champions Al Ahly and Cup winners Haras Hedood on July 21.
British company IMG have bid EGP140 million (US$25-million) to become host broadcasters of domestic league and cup matches in Egypt, while the traditional broadcasters, the Egyptian Radio and Television Union (ERTU), are only willing to pay EGP90 million (US$16-million).
Regulations do not dictate how broadcast rights should be handed out in Egypt, but it is clear the FA would rather keep it local. Given the impasse, the FA are threatening not to allow any broadcast of the Super Cup, the traditional opener to the League season.
"We stand firm on our decision. The match will not be aired," Egyptian FA president Samir Zaher said.

Egypt's robbery caused by womanising and drinking?
Egypt's team at the Confederations' Cup was robbed after they beat Italy.
And the media - especially the western variety have had a field day with proclaiming the veracity in South Africa's high crime rate.
Now after the robbery these were some statements and reactions. First, Thembi Nkhwashu, a spokesperson for the Gauteng South African Police Services:
“Five players have reported a case of theft, with the total sums lost amounting to US$2,400. The period when the money could have disappeared is from the time they left the hotel for the match [against Italy] until this morning when we were notified.
"All the players had a safe in their rooms and were given information on how to operate those services, but for one reason or other they did not follow the instructions.”
However, the Sunday World quoted a police officer as saying this bizarre thing:
“We have confirmed that some of the [Egyptian] players brought prostitutes [after beating Italy], whom they picked up on Oxford Road [in Rosebank], to their hotel rooms and we have strong suspicions that they were cleaned out by those ladies of the night.”
Well, if it is true...
However according to IOL another police spokesman claimed "they could have come up with the robbery claims to avoid being caught out or embarrassed by their spouses and girlfriends back home in Egypt.
"No money was taken from the safe, but we have heard that they had been drinking and womanising, and the same women later robbed them.
"We have reason to believe that they brought the women on to the premises and were celebrating with them before they were robbed of their money.”
Talk of pretenders.

Result: Egypt beat Italy. Incredible!
After taking a painful last minute penalty from Kaka's foot, Egypt's players walked out of the stadium with their heads held high - but they had no points to show for it.
Today, they've just beaten Italy 1-0.
A crucial goal by Momonos ensured that the North Africans have proven themselves worthy of the tag of African champs.
They got two yellow cards in the dying minutes of the game to goalie El Hadari and Wael Gomaa.
But who cares?
They've won!

Totally terrific Toulon stuff!
This year's Toulon tournament is currently ongoing and it has started dishing out great goals.
Like the one in the video below, scorched by UAE's Mohammed Abdulla against Egypt.
Certainly up there for goal of the tournament. The Toulon tournament involves eight U-21 teams who are invited to take part in a friendly tournament in (and around) Toulon, France running 9 days or so annually.
It is officially known as the Tournoi Espoirs de Toulon or Toulon Hopefuls' Tournament.
There are two four-team groups where each team plays the other three once and the winner/runner up advance to the semi-finals, winner onto the finals.
The eight participants this year are in two groups. Group A has Argentina, Egypt, Netherlands and UAE while Group B has Chile, France, Portugal and Qatar.

El Hadary gets himself a ban
Egypt goalkeeper Essam El Hadary has been banned from all football for four months for breaching his contract at former club Al-Ahly, but it cleared to play until next season.
FIFA announced the ban and said El Hadary and his current club FC Sion of Switzerland must pay 900,000 euro in compensation to the Egyptian side Al-Ahly.
World football body governing body's dispute panel also banned Sion, the Swiss Cup winners, from registering any new players until the end of the 2009-10 season for signing El Hadary last year.
The 36-year-old El Hadary is clear to play for Egypt in a World Cup qualifying match against Algeria on Sunday and in the June 14-28 Confederations Cup tournament in South Africa.
The ban then takes effect from the start of the next club season and will force him to miss three World Cup qualifiers.

101 great goals of 2008/09: Amr Zaki
As promised, I'm starting the series on the Africans involved in the esteemed 101 Great Goals of the just ended season.
First is the Egyptian Amr Zaki who placed 12th in the countdown. He scored a wonderful goal against at the beginning of the Premiership season when he had the Midas Touch. Sadly, the goals dried up and he became a benched item for Wigan. This was one of two he scored against Liverpool in that game.
Here's that goal again.

Egypt -Germany is on in November
This man -Egypt Football Association's president - has announced that his country will play a friendly against Germany on November 18.Samir Zaher: "Germany will pay the Egyptian national team €200,000 to host them in a friendly game."
According to Germany general manager Oliver Bierhoff, the match is part of the three-time world champions' build-up for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
However, the former Milan star said the game will only be played if Germany maintain leadership in Group 4 of the World Cup qualifying tournament.
Joachim Loew's team are on top of their group with 16 points, four more than closest rivals Russia.
Germany have also agreed another warm-up game with Chile on November 14.

Amr Zaki's celebs go sour for Egypt
Egypt's Amr Zaki sustained a farcical injury in farcical fashion. He was jumping for joy to celebrate Egypt's opener in their win against Oman but inadvertently bashed heads with teammate Ahmed Eid.

Former Ghana boss is beaten by Egypt
As this weekend is an officially Fifa-sanctioned one, the world would be an endless deluge of friendlies and qualifiers.
At the weekend Egypt beat former Black Stars gaffer Claude LeRoy's Oman. I've just grabbed the video.
So, that's that. It was the last match for the Pharaohs before their crucial meeting with North African rivals Algeria in Blida on June seventh.
Egypt and Algeria have one point each after being held to draws by Zambia and Rwanda respectively in the first round of matches.

Review: Ghana (U-23) 3 - South Africa (U-23) 5
I sat behind my telly yesterday afternoon wondering if I was watching the African champions playing.
Ghana's Black Satellites (under 20) are the current champions after winning in Rwanda.
As part of their winning package, they've got a free ticket to represent Africa in Egypt at the World Youth Championships later this year.
And in preparation, Ghana decided to play South Africa's under 23 in Accra. South Africa's team - the Amajita - had good reason to accept to play the Stars. Ghana beat them in Rwanda in a very very entertaining game. They weren't kicked out, but it was a setback. Ghana, of course, went on to win the tourney.
I met the game after it had started. South Africa were 3-1 up and had all the possession. Our defense was spineless. Soon, Ghana scored. 3-2. Not long after, South Africa had a penalty and chucked it away. 4-2.
It was getting a bit embarassing but soon Ghana a had a penalty of their own and Daniel Addo scored. 4-3.
Sellas Tetteh was standing in the cool breeze with the Atlantic Ocean 1000 meters away. But he was fidgeting in his internal heat. His several subs seemed to be working.
Then the killer blow came. The southerners made it 5-3. They were cruising. Ghana was disbelieving. Game over
In the post-match interviews, Sellas Tetteh said Ghana could learn from the defeat.
“I was pleased with the reaction of the boys in the second half as they showed commitment and a desire to fight. That was a good response from them against a technically good side.
“But we made too many mistakes and had problems with our centre back pairing. We can only build on this. It was good to bring on new local players and try them. When they full squad assembles, we would be up there.
“The target is the World Championship, so we have to work towards that.”
The truth of the matter is that Ghana was defenceless. Without the foreign based contingent Ghana looks very pale indeed. Is the local talent not good enough without Ransford Osei, Dominic Adiyiah et al?
It looks so.
As for the Amajita, they were delighted and rightly so.
“After the 4-3 we lost to Ghana in Rwanda, we came here with the intention of winning,” said the Amajita coach Serame Letsoaka
“We made good use of our good chances and we are happy with the result.”
Even one of their players, Kermit Erasmus, scored twice - and on his debut. Their next game is against in Uruguay. Ghana plays Venezuela next.
Maybe, both teams would meet again in Egypt for a part three of their 2009 meetings.
